Numerical analysis of Richards' problem for water penetration in unsaturated soils

چکیده
Unsaturated flow of soils in unsaturated soils is an important problem in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. Richards’ equation is often used to model this phenomenon in porous media. Obtaining appropriate solution to this equation therefore provides better means to studying the infiltration into unsaturated soils. Available 5 methods for the solution of Richards’ equation mostly fall in the category of numerical methods, often having restrictions for practical cases. In this research, two analytical methods known as Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) and Variational Iteration Method (VIM) have been successfully utilized for solving Richards’ equation. Results obtained from the two methods mentioned show a remarkably high precision in the 10 obtained solution, compared with the existing exact solutions available.

Selection of Intermodal Conductivity Averaging Scheme for Unsaturated Flow in Homogeneous Media
The nonlinear solvers in numerical solution of water flow in variably saturated soils are prone to convergence difficulties. Many aspects can give rise to such difficulties, like very dry initial conditions, a steep pressure gradient and great variation of hydraulic conductivity occur across the wetting front during the infiltration of water. So, the averaging method applied to compute hydraul...

Flow movement in unsaturated soil can be expressed by a partial differential equation, named Richards equation. The objective of this study is the finding of an appropriate implicit numerical solution for head based Richards equation. Some of the well known finite difference schemes (fully implicit, Crank Nicolson and Runge-Kutta) have been utilized in this study. In addition, the effects of di...

The water flow in unsaturated soils is governed by Richards equation, a nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation. In a layered unsaturated soil, enforcing the continuity of both pressure head and flux across the interface of distinct soil materials leads to a non-linear interface equation. This interface equation may exhibit multiple solutions. Using different averaging methods for cel...

A numerical solution for heave prediction is developed within the context theories for both saturated and unsaturated soil behaviors. Basically, lowering the potential level of compressing on a saturated layer will cause heaving due to water absorption. This water absorption is in an opposite way, similar to water dissipation as what happens during unloading in consolidation process. However, i...
